ABOUT BOTSWANA
Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa roughly the size of France or Texas. It is a very peaceful and stable country with a growing economy driven by tourism, mining and cattle. At Independence in 1966, it was one of the poorest countries in the world. With the discovery of diamonds, the country was set on a course for prosperity and development leading it to be one of Africa's favoured stable and growing economies. Tourism has played an equally prolific role in the development of the economy and people especially in the north of the country. Botswana set aside more than 33 percent of its land surface to protect it's wildlife. Famous parts like the Okavango Delta are protected through a system of Game Reserves, private concessions and community wildlife management areas.
ABOUT BOTSWANA'S WILDLIFE
Botswana is famed for its dedication to protecting its wildlife. National Parks and Game Reserves form the core of that protection. Botswana boasts the single largest Elephant populations in Africa as well as a few intact migration routes for Zebra. In fact, the Makgadikgadi Pans migration, numbering around 25 000 individuals, is the second largest Zebra migration in Africa after the Serengeti in Tanzania. Healthy predator populations are also key to the Apex predators like Lion, Cheetah, Leopard and African Wild Dog. Across the north of the country, a single Lion population with genetic exchange, occurs from Hwange in Zimbabwe to northern Namibia. Botswana also has the single largest African Wild Dog population and the country is key to the long term survival of this critically endangered species. The Kalahari especially is a strategic stronghold of Cheetah - a predator whose numbers have been reduced to only 7000 in the world.
